Tuggar Resigns as Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister

By Ahmed Ahmed

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from his position, bringing an end to his tenure in the Federal Executive Council.

The resignation was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday in Bauchi by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, to the minister.

According to the statement, Tuggar formally submitted his resignation letter ahead of the March 31 deadline set for political office holders.

In the letter, the outgoing minister expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the country and contribute to the implementation of the administration’s 4D foreign policy framework. He described his time in office as a privilege and reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s progress.

Tuggar also appreciated the management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the diplomatic community, for their cooperation and support throughout his tenure.
During his time in office, Tuggar was noted for advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives through people-centred diplomacy.

His efforts included facilitating humanitarian evacuations, supporting Nigerians in the diaspora, and promoting scholarship opportunities for citizens abroad.

He also strengthened diaspora engagement through initiatives such as the development of a structured Nigerians-in-Diaspora database.

The minister further deepened Nigeria’s bilateral and multilateral relations, particularly with partners in the Global South, while promoting regional security cooperation.

His tenure also saw the formation of the Regional Partnership for Democracy (RPD) and efforts to position Nigeria as an attractive destination for foreign investment, especially in the energy sector.

Tuggar’s resignation letter was received on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by Dr. Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office.
