Oshiomhole Warns of Retaliatory Measures Against South Africa Over Alleged Attacks
Former Edo State governor and senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has issued a strong warning over alleged attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, stating that Nigeria could take decisive retaliatory actions if the situation persists.
Speaking on the growing tensions, Oshiomhole said Nigeria would not tolerate harm against its citizens, stressing that the country must respond firmly to protect its people and national dignity.
“When we hit back, the president of South Africa will not only talk, he’ll go on his knees to recognise that Nigerians cannot be intimidated and we do not condone any one life being lost,” he said.
The senator suggested that potential measures could include economic actions targeting major South African business interests in Nigeria, such as MTN Nigeria and MultiChoice Group, which operates the DStv service.
He further emphasised that Nigeria must adopt a firm stance to deter further incidents, adding that strong responses could restore balance and compel respect for Nigerian lives and interests.
Oshiomhole’s remarks come amid heightened concerns over reported xenophobic attacks and tensions involving African migrants in South Africa, which have drawn condemnation from several quarters.
While no official policy action has been announced by the Federal Government, the comments reflect growing calls for stronger diplomatic and economic responses to protect Nigerians abroad.
Observers say the situation may require urgent engagement between both countries to prevent escalation and maintain regional stability.
