Troops Neutralise Eight Terrorists, Foil Planned Attack on Commuters in Katsina

Troops of the 17 Brigade under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, in collaboration with Hybrid Forces, have foiled a planned terrorist attack on commuters and neutralised eight terrorists during a successful ambush operation in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The operation, carried out through actionable intelligence, is the latest in the military’s ongoing offensive against terrorist and bandit groups operating across Nigeria’s North-West.

According to operational reports, troops received credible intelligence that terrorists loyal to a notorious kingpin, Idi Abasu Aiki, were planning to attack travellers along the Kakumi–Guga Road. The terrorists were said to be advancing towards the area on five motorcycles to ambush unsuspecting commuters.

Acting on the intelligence, troops and Hybrid Forces swiftly deployed to the location and laid a carefully planned ambush along the terrorists’ route.

The terrorists reportedly walked into the ambush before they could carry out the planned attack, leading to a fierce gun battle during which troops overpowered the criminals and neutralised eight terrorists.

Following the operation, troops recovered two AK-47 rifles and five motorcycles believed to have been used by the terrorists during their operations.

Military authorities said the operation successfully prevented what could have resulted in heavy civilian casualties, noting that rural roads in parts of the North-West have frequently been targeted by terrorists for attacks, kidnappings and armed robbery.

The success, according to the military, underscores the importance of intelligence-led operations in combating terrorism and other violent crimes, enabling troops to intercept criminal elements before they strike.

The operation also highlighted the effectiveness of collaboration between conventional military forces and Hybrid Forces, whose local knowledge and operational support contributed significantly to the success of the mission.

Following the clearance operation, troops commenced aggressive patrols and intensified area domination to prevent any retaliatory attacks and deny the terrorists freedom of movement.

The latest achievement adds to the growing operational successes recorded under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which has continued to sustain offensive operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks, protecting communities and restoring lasting peace across Katsina State and the wider North-West region.
