Alleged Social Media Link Sparks Controversy Over INEC Chairman’s Neutrality
Fresh controversy has emerged around the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, following claims linking him to alleged partisan activity during Nigeria’s 2023 general elections.
According to reports circulating online, open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysis purportedly traced an email address and phone number—allegedly associated with the INEC Chairman—to an account on X (formerly Twitter). The account is said to have responded “Victory is sure” to a March 18, 2023 post by Dayo Israel, then National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), celebrating electoral gains.
Screenshots of the alleged interaction have since circulated widely on social media, with claims that the account was later renamed or made private, further fueling public debate and scrutiny.
However, INEC has firmly denied the allegations, describing them as “entirely baseless” and a fabrication intended to undermine the credibility of the electoral body. The Commission reiterated that Prof. Amupitan does not operate any personal account on X and has never engaged in partisan commentary.
INEC also characterized the claims as part of a coordinated misinformation campaign aimed at eroding public trust, particularly at a sensitive period for Nigeria’s electoral process.
Despite the Commission’s denial, the emergence of the alleged digital linkages has intensified public discourse around the neutrality of the electoral umpire, raising broader concerns about misinformation, identity theft, and the integrity of online narratives.
The development underscores the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping political perception, as well as the challenges institutions face in combating disinformation in the digital age.
