Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria has emerged as the 2026 ENACTUS Nigeria National Champion, earning the right to represent Nigeria at the 2026 ENACTUS World Cup in São Paulo, Brazil, in November.

The victory came after the ABU ENACTUS team outperformed teams from universities and polytechnics across the country at the national competition held at the Civic Centre, Lekki, Lagos, from August 11 to 15, 2026.

The triumph has qualified the university to compete on the global stage, where teams from 36 ENACTUS countries are expected to showcase innovative entrepreneurial and social-impact projects aimed at addressing real-world challenges in their communities.

ABU Project Targets Tomato Value Chain

At this year’s competition, the ABU team presented a project focused on tackling critical challenges across Nigeria’s tomato agricultural value chain, particularly pre-harvest pest infestation and post-harvest losses.

The project demonstrated how student-led innovation, research, farmer engagement and partnerships can be transformed into practical solutions capable of improving agricultural productivity and strengthening livelihoods.

The Faculty Adviser of ENACTUS ABU, Prof. M.K. Aliyu, mni, described the national championship as a major milestone for the university, the students and the communities that benefited from the project.

He attributed the success to months of intensive research, community engagement, product development, farmer training, partnership building and teamwork, involving students, alumni, mentors, development partners and the wider university community.

“As we prepare to represent the university and Nigeria on the global stage, we dearly and deeply seek the continued support of ABU management to project the university in this positive enterprise,” Aliyu said.

He expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and the university management for their continued support for student innovation and entrepreneurship.

Prof. Aliyu also acknowledged the contributions of the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), East-West Seed Nigeria, ICERFE, and the Department of Crop Protection, whose technical expertise and research support helped transform the students’ ideas into practical solutions.

Team of Students Leads ABU to Victory

Prof. Aliyu led the ABU delegation, comprising team leaders and more than 150 members, to the national competition in Lagos.

The student leadership team included Abdulfattah O. Omisanya, Team Leader; Augustine Onoja, Project Manager; and George O. Otegwu, Secretary-General.

Other members of the leadership team were Hajara Abdulmumin, Financial Secretary; Mohammad Kabiru Umar, Technical Director; and Peace John, Social Media Officer.

The national competition brought together ENACTUS teams from institutions across Nigeria, with participants presenting innovative business and social-enterprise projects before a panel comprising academics, entrepreneurs, business leaders and industry experts.

ABU’s victory now sets the stage for its students to showcase Nigerian innovation and social entrepreneurship at the 2026 ENACTUS World Cup in São Paulo, where they will compete against some of the world’s leading student innovators.

The achievement further highlights Ahmadu Bello University’s growing commitment to entrepreneurship, research, innovation and community-driven solutions, while placing the institution and Nigeria on an international platform for student-led impact.
