Atiku Visits Amaechi in Abuja After ADC Presidential Primary
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has visited former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi at his residence in Abuja following the conclusion of the African Democratic Congress presidential primary election.
The visit comes shortly after Atiku emerged as the ADC presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, defeating Amaechi and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the contest.
Atiku secured over 1.8 million votes in the primary, while Amaechi polled about 504,000 votes and Hayatu-Deen finished third.
The meeting is widely seen as part of efforts to calm tensions within the ADC and strengthen party unity ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The party’s primary election had generated controversy after Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen reportedly rejected the outcome, alleging irregularities and unfair practices during the exercise.
Despite the disagreements that followed the contest, Atiku had earlier appealed to all aggrieved aspirants and party members to close ranks and work together in what he described as a broader struggle to rescue Nigeria and strengthen democracy.
Political observers believe the visit to Amaechi’s residence represents a strategic reconciliation effort aimed at preventing divisions within the opposition coalition as preparations intensify for the next general election.
Sources within the party say Atiku is expected to continue consultations with key stakeholders and former rivals in order to build a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 polls.
The development has already sparked reactions among party supporters, with many expressing hope that the opposition figures would put aside differences and work together to strengthen the ADC’s chances in the upcoming election.
