CAS Aneke Calls for Stronger Strategic Leadership to Sustain NAF Operational Effectiveness
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has stressed the importance of effective strategic leadership in sustaining the operational effectiveness, institutional performance and long-term relevance of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
Air Marshal Aneke made the remarks on August 12, 2026, while delivering the keynote address at the Strategic Leadership and Management Workshop and Induction Ceremony held at NAF Headquarters, Abuja.
The CAS said Nigeria’s increasingly complex security environment requires military leaders capable of anticipating emerging threats, assessing risks, optimising available resources and making sound decisions with long-term implications for the Service.
He noted that the contemporary security landscape is characterised by uncertainty, rapid technological advancement and evolving threats, making it necessary for military leadership to go beyond managing immediate operational demands.
According to him, strategic leadership is essential to translating available personnel, resources and capabilities into meaningful operational effects.
He linked the requirement to his Command Philosophy of “Standardised Training and Mission-Focused Capability Development,” which places strong emphasis on continuously strengthening the intellectual, professional and leadership capacities of NAF personnel.
Workshop to Strengthen Senior Officers
Air Marshal Aneke explained that the workshop was designed to enhance the capacity of senior officers in strategic leadership, organisational effectiveness, policy formulation, governance, decision-making and resource management.
He said the competencies acquired would enable participants to effectively manage their current responsibilities while also anticipating future challenges, developing appropriate institutional responses and positioning the NAF for sustained operational effectiveness.
The CAS urged participants to critically examine established practices, engage actively with facilitators and apply lessons from the programme to the realities of managing a complex military organisation.
“Officers of air rank have an important responsibility to strengthen institutional performance, foster innovation, develop their subordinates and ensure that decisions taken today contribute to the long-term effectiveness of the Service,” he said.
He further emphasised that the success of the programme would ultimately be measured by how effectively participants translate the knowledge gained into practical improvements across their respective commands and formations.
Strategic Management Induction
Air Marshal Aneke also highlighted the professional significance of the induction of eligible participants as Full Members of the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria, Chartered.
He said the induction would provide professional recognition in strategic management while strengthening competencies relevant to senior military leadership, institutional governance and organisational performance.
The CAS commended the organisers and the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria for the collaboration, expressing confidence that the initiative would contribute significantly to the professional development of participating officers and strengthen the NAF’s institutional and operational capacity.
He noted that the programme reinforces the Service’s commitment to leadership development as a force multiplier, stressing that effective airpower depends not only on platforms, equipment and personnel, but also on the quality of leadership, decision-making, resource management and innovation that convert those capabilities into decisive operational effects.
Institute Pledges Continued Support
Earlier, the President/Chairman-in-Council of the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria, Mr Alex Ndudi Enebeli, FSM, represented by the immediate past President of the Institute, Dr Otive Igbuzor, FSM, welcomed participants to the programme.
He emphasised the importance of strategic management and leadership in improving organisational performance, describing the partnership with the NAF as an important platform for strengthening the strategic leadership capabilities of senior military officers.
He said the programme would equip participants with contemporary knowledge and skills required to make sound decisions, optimise resources and drive institutional effectiveness.
The workshop underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s continued focus on developing forward-looking, professionally competent and strategically minded leaders capable of guiding the Service through Nigeria’s evolving security environment.
