China Approves First Commercial Brain Implant for Paralysis Patients in Medical Milestone
China has approved what is being described as the world’s first commercially authorised brain implant, marking a major breakthrough in neurotechnology and assistive medicine.
The device, named NEO, was developed by Neuracle Technology in collaboration with researchers at Tsinghua University and received approval from China’s National Medical Products Administration in March 2026. It is designed to help patients with complete limb paralysis resulting from spinal cord injuries.
According to reports, early clinical trials have shown promising results. In one case, a paralyzed patient reportedly used the implant at home over a nine-month period to perform basic daily tasks such as moving objects, eating, and drinking independently.
Unlike some competing brain–computer interface systems, NEO uses a less invasive approach. The device is placed on top of the brain’s protective membrane rather than being inserted into brain tissue. Researchers say this design reduces surgical risk and may make regulatory approval more achievable compared to deeper-implant systems.
Experts note that this distinction sets it apart from other emerging technologies still in experimental phases, including Neuralink, which remains under regulatory trials in the United States with a limited number of participants and has not yet received commercial approval.
Neurotechnology specialists have described the development as a significant step forward for assistive medicine, particularly for individuals living with severe mobility impairments. However, they also stress that broader clinical validation and long-term safety assessments will be necessary before widespread adoption.
The approval of NEO is being seen as a landmark moment in brain–computer interface research, bringing the concept of direct communication between the human brain and machines closer to real-world medical application.
