Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State – The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday joined the governors of Ebonyi, Imo, Abia and Enugu states to perform the groundbreaking ceremony for a 120-bed Nigerian Army Medical Centre at the Depot Nigerian Army, Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State.
The project is part of the Nigerian Army’s efforts to strengthen its operational support infrastructure, enhance healthcare delivery for personnel and expand its presence across the South-East.
According to the Army, the proposed medical facility will serve as a strategic healthcare hub for troops, particularly recruits undergoing training at the depot, while also providing medical support for ongoing and future military operations in the region.
The Army noted that the project is designed to improve force readiness by ensuring personnel have access to quality medical care, thereby sustaining a healthy and combat-ready force.
In line with its civil-military cooperation strategy, the medical centre will also provide healthcare services to residents of neighbouring communities. Located outside the depot, the facility is expected to improve access to quality medical services for civilians while strengthening relations between the Nigerian Army and host communities.
When completed, the hospital will include emergency and trauma care units, surgical theatres, intensive care units, diagnostic laboratories, specialist and outpatient clinics, as well as dedicated wards for men, women and children.
The facility will also feature a psychiatric unit dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other operational stress-related conditions, reflecting the Army’s growing emphasis on the mental health and overall well-being of its personnel.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Chief of Army Staff and the governors described the project as a strategic investment in national security and regional development.
They said the medical centre would strengthen the Army’s operational support system, improve healthcare delivery, promote socio-economic development and contribute to lasting peace and stability in the South-East.
The Nigerian Army said the project underscores its continued commitment to expanding its operational capabilities while supporting national development through improved healthcare infrastructure and stronger community engagement.
