Court Admits Newspaper Publications as Evidence in Emefiele’s Naira Redesign Trial
Justice Maryanne Anineh of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, has admitted newspaper publications tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, over the alleged unlawful redesign of the naira.
At the resumed hearing on Monday, May 11, 2026, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, presented certified copies of newspaper publications from Punch Newspapers, ThisDay Newspapers, Vanguard Media, Daily Sun and The Nation Newspaper through the eighth prosecution witness, Jegede Oluwasegun.
The publications reportedly contained reports relating to the alleged unlawful naira redesign, alongside payment receipts for the purchase of the newspapers.
According to Oyedepo, the witness and documents were presented in compliance with a motion filed by the defence on March 31, 2026, requesting the prosecution to produce all press releases and newspaper reports connected to the alleged unlawful act.
The documents were admitted in evidence without objection from the defence team.
During cross-examination by defence counsel, Olalekun Ojo, the witness stated that his official duty at the National Library was to attend to information requests and certify newspaper documents.
He clarified that he was neither the author of the newspaper publications nor in a position to comment on the contents, noting that his role was limited to certifying the documents.
Emefiele is currently facing a four-count charge filed by the EFCC over the alleged unlawful printing and redesign of new naira notes.
