Court Jails Two Relatives of Slain Bandit Leader for Terrorism-Related Offences
The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced two relatives of slain bandit leader, Kachallah Ibrahim Battujo, to 20 years imprisonment each for aiding terrorism and concealing information about his activities.
Justice Hauwa Yilwa delivered the judgment on Friday after the defendants, Safiya Salihu and Halima Abdullahi, pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges brought against them by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).
The court heard that the convicts were involved in activities that supported terrorism and deliberately withheld information regarding the operations of the notorious bandit leader.
Following their guilty plea, Justice Yilwa convicted and sentenced both defendants to 20 years imprisonment each in accordance with the provisions of the law.
The prosecution, led by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, argued that the offences undermined national security and aided criminal activities linked to terrorism and banditry.
The conviction is part of ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to strengthen the fight against terrorism financing, support networks and individuals who provide assistance or conceal information relating to terrorist and criminal groups.
Security analysts have described the judgment as a significant step in holding not only perpetrators of violent crimes accountable but also those who facilitate or shield them from law enforcement agencies.
Kachallah Ibrahim Battujo was a notorious bandit leader linked to several criminal activities in parts of northern Nigeria before he was killed during security operations. Authorities have continued investigations aimed at dismantling networks associated with his operations and bringing collaborators to justice.
