The Faculty of Law Theatre at the  University of Abuja (now Yakubu Gowon University) was transformed into a hub of creativity and inspiration earlier today as renowned industry figures, including Francis Duru and Richard Mofe-Damijo, lent their voices and presence to the Cultural Carnival and Induction/Initiation Ceremony of newly admitted students of the Department of Theatre Arts.

The event, which drew students, faculty members, parents, and stakeholders in the creative industry, combined formal induction rites with vibrant cultural performances, underscoring the dynamic nature of theatre education at the institution.

From the very beginning, the ceremony, pilotes by the department’s acting head, Dr. Agoma Awaritoma, carried an atmosphere of excitement and purpose. Music, dance, fashion parade, and dramatic presentations filled the venue, turning the Faculty of Law Theatre into a live showcase of artistic expression. However, beyond the performances, it was the words of the guest speakers that left a lasting impression on the audience.

Cultural Performance By the Students

The Vice Chancelor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi was beside himself with e,xcitement, as he highlighyed what great honour it was to have the industry stakeholders visit the University.

Duru, a veteran actor on stage and television, challenged the students to embrace discipline and originality, urging them to understand the deeper responsibility that comes with choosing a career in the arts. He emphasized that theatre is not merely entertainment but a tool for societal reflection and transformation.

Similarly, Richard Mofe-Damijo—fondly known as RMD—brought both star power and substance to the occasion. Drawing from his vast experience in the Nigerian film and theatre industry, he encouraged the students to believe in their potential and to approach their craft with seriousness and commitment, as he narratted with deep emotion, his personal journey into stardom.

He noted that while fame and recognition may come with time, the foundation of success remains hard work, consistency, and self-awareness.

A central theme that resonated throughout the ceremony was the concept of identity and becoming. RMD reminded students that while theatre requires them to assume different roles, they must remain grounded in their true selves.

“Wear the character when you are on stage,” he advised, “but never lose yourself in the process.”

The ceremony also served as a formal welcome for the newly admitted students, who were officially inducted into the department, in a brief ceremony led by Professor Mabel Ewherhoma. They were encouraged to see themselves as the next generation of storytellers and cultural ambassadors, capable of shaping narratives within Nigeria and beyond.

Parents and guardians were acknowledged for their support, while returning students were tasked with mentoring the newcomers and upholding the values of the department.

The presence of industry professionals like Duru and RMD further bridged the gap between academic training and real-world practice, offering students a glimpse into the possibilities that lie ahead. Others are, popular Nigerian comedian and compere, Chuks the General, Ambassador Mercy Salma Aminu, the Mayor, Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abuja Chapter, and the FCT Chapter Chairman of the National Assoxiation of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), Om’Oba Jerry Adesewo.

As the event drew to a close, it became clear that the Cultural Carnival was not just a celebration, but a call to purpose. For the new students of Theatre Arts at UniAbuja, the journey has begun—with inspiration from some of the industry’s finest guiding their path.
