EFCC Explains Visit to Uyo Teaching Hospital Over Medical Report Verification
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained that the Tuesday, May 12, 2026, visit by operatives of its Uyo Zonal Directorate to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) was part of efforts to authenticate a medical report submitted by a suspect standing trial for alleged fraud.
According to the commission, the suspect is currently under remand by Justice M.A. Onyetunu of the Federal High Court in Uyo over allegations of defrauding several microfinance banks, including the University of Uyo Micro Finance Bank.
The EFCC stated that the suspect had presented a medical report requiring verification by the hospital management.
The commission disclosed that it had earlier written two separate letters to the hospital management on March 11 and April 20, 2026, requesting authentication of the report but received no response.
According to the EFCC, the investigating officer handling the matter later visited the hospital to inquire about the request but still did not receive any feedback.
The agency said operatives subsequently visited the Chief Medical Director of the hospital on Tuesday as a final step to make further inquiries, but alleged that they were locked inside the premises after a false alarm was raised.
The commission further alleged that some staff members attacked the operatives with stones and other dangerous objects during the incident.
The EFCC claimed that the hospital’s Chief Medical Director ordered the closure of the facility’s gates, preventing lawful inquiries and restricting the operatives from leaving the premises.
It added that despite intervention by police authorities in Akwa Ibom State urging that the gates be opened, the request was allegedly ignored.
The anti-graft agency, however, noted that its operatives exercised restraint and eventually left the hospital premises peacefully without disrupting hospital activities.
The commission reiterated that inquiries related to its operations are lawful and urged public institutions and corporate bodies to cooperate with investigations, warning that obstruction of lawful duties could attract legal consequences.
