Father Makes 10-Year-Old Daughter Walk to School After Bus Suspension for Bullying
A father in Ohio, United States, sparked widespread debate in December 2018 after making his 10-year-old daughter walk to school following her suspension from the school bus for bullying another student.
The incident involved Kirsten Cox of Swanton, Ohio, whose father, Matt Cox, said he wanted her to understand that bullying has consequences.
According to reports, Kirsten had been banned from riding the school bus for three days after bullying another student. It was reportedly the second time she had been suspended from the bus during that school year.
When Kirsten told her father he would have to drive her to school, Matt decided to take a different approach. Instead of driving her, he made her walk approximately eight kilometres over three days in temperatures of about 2°C, while he followed behind slowly in his car.
Matt also filmed part of the walk and shared the video on Facebook on December 3, 2018, explaining that his decision was intended to teach his daughter about accountability and the consequences of bullying.
The video attracted more than 15 million views, generating widespread reactions from parents and social media users.
While some praised Matt for holding his daughter accountable for her behaviour, others questioned whether filming and publicly sharing the punishment was appropriate, arguing that it could expose the child to embarrassment and public humiliation.
Matt later said he believed his daughter had learned from the experience.
The incident continues to raise questions about parenting, discipline and the best ways to address bullying among children.
While many agree that bullying should have consequences, the debate remains over whether such punishments are effective lessons in responsibility or whether public exposure can cause additional harm.
