Federal Government Postpones Global Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance in Abuja

The Federal Government has announced the postponement of the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), which was scheduled to take place in Abuja from June 28 to 30, 2026.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, who said the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and partners involved in preparations for the international conference.

According to the statement, a new date for the conference will be communicated in due course.

The government expressed regret over any inconvenience the postponement may cause to delegates, partners, and stakeholders, while thanking them for their understanding, support, and continued cooperation.

It also extended appreciation to members of the AMR Troika, the Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR, participating countries, development partners, international organisations, civil society groups, academic institutions, youth networks, and other stakeholders for their contributions toward the planned event.

The Federal Government reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to hosting the conference and advancing global efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance through the One Health approach, which recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.

Despite the postponement, the government stated that preparatory activities would continue under the supervision of the Local Organising Committee and relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

It added that engagement with international partners and stakeholders would also continue to ensure the successful hosting of the conference at a later date.

The government noted that antimicrobial resistance remains one of the most pressing global public health challenges, requiring sustained commitment, coordinated policies, and international collaboration to address its growing impact on health systems, food security, and economic development.

Nigeria reiterated its readiness to welcome delegates from around the world to Abuja once the conference is rescheduled and pledged to continue supporting collective global action against antimicrobial resistance.
