Federal Government Receives 269 Nigerians Evacuated from South Africa

The Federal Government has received another batch of 269 Nigerians who voluntarily returned from South Africa as part of an ongoing evacuation programme.

The returnees arrived aboard an Air Peace flight, which landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where they were received by the Director of African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Haruna Ali-Gombe.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ali-Gombe conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s goodwill message to the returnees and reassured them of the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the interests and welfare of Nigerians living abroad.

The ministry stated that the latest group is the second batch of evacuees from South Africa, bringing the total number of Nigerians who have returned under the programme to 335.

The voluntary evacuation follows South Africa’s June 30 deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country.

The Federal Government said it would continue engaging South African authorities to safeguard the rights and welfare of Nigerians residing in the country while the voluntary repatriation exercise continues.

It added that more evacuation flights are expected in the coming days to bring home Nigerians who have completed the screening process and opted to return voluntarily.
