The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding non-formal education as part of efforts to create jobs, empower young people and equip Nigerians with practical skills for economic growth.

Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, stated this during a plenary session at the ongoing Education World Forum (EWF) in London, United Kingdom.

The session, moderated by Prince Edward, focused on the importance of non-formal education, soft skills development and the role of industry partnerships in strengthening employability and improving individual wellbeing.

According to the minister, the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to empowering both out-of-school children and students in formal education through skills-based learning initiatives.

He explained that the government, through the Ministry of Education, is implementing programmes designed to support out-of-school youths, adults and vulnerable groups by addressing literacy gaps and providing vocational and technical skills.

Alausa said the initiatives are intended to improve access to education while helping to integrate underserved and disadvantaged populations into the economy.

Among the programmes highlighted by the minister was the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative, which he described as a flagship programme offering tuition-free vocational education, stipends and start-up support aimed at reducing skills shortages and promoting entrepreneurship.

He also highlighted the National Policy on Skills Development, which promotes flexible learning pathways through practical training, digital literacy and vocational education.

The minister noted that strengthening non-formal education remains a key component of the government’s broader strategy to improve employability and provide young Nigerians with opportunities for economic participation.
