FIFA Unveils High-Tech ‘Trionda’ Ball for 2026 World Cup

As anticipation builds ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, attention is once again turning to one of the tournament’s most iconic symbols — the official match ball. Over the years, FIFA World Cup footballs have generated excitement and debate, from the Telstar used in Russia 2018 to the Brazuca at Brazil 2014 and the controversial Jabulani at South Africa 2010.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar introduced Al Rihla, the first FIFA World Cup ball equipped with connected-ball technology that supported semi-automated offside decisions and real-time data transmission. Now, Adidas has raised the bar with the unveiling of Trionda, the official match ball for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Designed specifically for the first-ever World Cup to be jointly hosted by three nations — Canada, Mexico and the United States — Trionda combines advanced technology with symbolic design elements celebrating the historic partnership.

According to Adidas, the name “Trionda” blends the prefix “tri,” representing the three host nations, with “onda,” the Spanish word for wave. The name translates to “Three Waves,” symbolising the unity of the three countries and the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coastlines connected to the tournament.

The ball features a striking red, green and blue colour scheme, representing Canada, Mexico and the United States respectively. Its design incorporates national symbols including Canada’s maple leaf, Mexico’s eagle and the United States’ star, while gold embellishments pay tribute to the FIFA World Cup Trophy.

Trionda also introduces significant performance innovations. It features a four-panel construction — the fewest ever used on a FIFA World Cup match ball — reducing seams and creating a more consistent playing surface. Deep seams built into the ball help improve aerodynamic stability, ensuring a more predictable flight path.

For players, the ball includes embossed surface details that enhance grip during wet or humid conditions, improving control when dribbling or striking the ball.

Perhaps the most remarkable feature of Trionda is its advanced connected-ball technology. A 500Hz motion sensor chip suspended at the centre of the ball records every touch, kick and deflection in real time. The system transmits data directly to video assistant referee (VAR) officials, helping match officials make faster and more accurate decisions.

The technology is expected to further enhance FIFA’s Semi-Automated Offside Technology by identifying the exact point of contact when the ball is played, allowing offside decisions to be resolved within seconds.

Adidas also highlighted the ball’s environmental credentials, noting that it is produced using water-based glues and inks as part of the company’s sustainability efforts.

With its blend of cutting-edge technology, innovative engineering and symbolic design, Trionda is set to become one of the most talked-about official match balls in FIFA World Cup history when the tournament kicks off across North America in 2026.
