Warri Unity Games Celebrate Culture, Peace, Shared Identity Across Delta
The inaugural Warri Unity Games have brought together diverse tribes from across Delta State in a vibrant celebration of sport, culture, friendship and peaceful coexistence.
Conceived by His Royal Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, the inter-tribal sporting event was designed to strengthen relationships among the different communities that make up Warri, using sport as a platform to promote mutual respect, unity and a shared sense of belonging.
The competition featured football, tug of war, relay races and paintball, with teams representing the Itsekiri, Urhobo, Ijaw, Isoko, Bini and other participating groups.
The games culminated in a keenly contested final, with Team Ijaw emerging as overall champions and receiving ₦10 million. Team Urhobo finished as first runner-up and received ₦5 million, while Team Itsekiri placed second runner-up and received ₦3 million.
Beyond the prizes and sporting results, the event provided an opportunity for people from different ethnic backgrounds to come together, compete as friends and celebrate their shared connection to Warri.
The occasion was attended by His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III and Her Majesty Olori Atuwatse III, alongside prominent traditional and public figures, including His Imperial Majesty Obi (Dr.) Gregory Nnamdi Oputa III, His Royal Majesty Kingsley Emakpo Orereh, Ataneru Igbi II, and representatives of the Delta State Government.
Addressing participants and guests, His Majesty reaffirmed the Palace’s commitment to building a Warri Kingdom founded on dignity, equality and mutual respect. He stressed that the word “slave” has no place in the vocabulary of the Palace or in the way any tribe within the Kingdom should be regarded.
The monarch said the Unity Games would not be a one-off event, announcing that they would henceforth be held on the first Saturday of every coronation anniversary.
The annual event is expected to provide a lasting platform for the people of Warri to meet, interact, compete and celebrate their cultural diversity while strengthening the bonds that unite them.
The Warri Unity Games therefore represent more than a sporting competition; they are an emerging tradition aimed at promoting peace, social cohesion, cultural appreciation and a stronger sense of shared identity among all who call Warri home.
