Nigerian basketball player Stephanie Okechukwu has made history after making her debut for Texas Tech University in the United States, becoming the tallest player ever to feature in NCAA women’s basketball.

The 21-year-old, who stands at an impressive 7 feet 1 inch (2.16 metres), achieved the milestone on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during Texas Tech’s season-opening game against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Okechukwu made an impressive start, recording six points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 21 minutes as Texas Tech defeated Charlotte 64–37.

She also became the first seven-foot player to feature in NCAA women’s basketball, surpassing the previous record held by players listed at 6 feet 11 inches.

Born in Umunneochi, Abia State, Nigeria, Okechukwu signed with Texas Tech in January 2026 but did not feature during the previous season while awaiting clearance from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

She recently received approval from the NCAA for four years of eligibility following an appeal by the university, allowing her to pursue her college basketball career while completing her education.

Before joining Texas Tech, she attended Fukuchiyama Seibi High School in Kyoto, Japan, where she developed her basketball skills.

Her historic debut has attracted attention to Nigerian talent on the international basketball stage and marks a significant milestone in women’s college basketball.
