A 29-year-old Chinese woman has inspired thousands after completing one of the world’s toughest obstacle races entirely from a wheelchair.

Zhang Qihui crossed the finish line of the Spartan Race Sprint at Moganshan International Tourism Resort in Deqing County, Zhejiang Province, after tackling a demanding 6.6-kilometre course featuring 23 obstacles.

She completed the challenge in 3 hours, 13 minutes and 57 seconds, overcoming walls, mud, rope obstacles and difficult mountainous terrain using the strength of her upper body.

Born in Jingmen, Hubei Province, Zhang lost both legs at just three years old following a car accident. Rather than allowing the experience to define her limitations, she went on to build an extraordinary life filled with achievement and adventure.

A talented musician, Zhang holds a master’s degree in bamboo flute from Minzu University of China and has won first prize in the instrumental category of a national arts competition for performers with disabilities three consecutive times.

Her ambitions, however, extend far beyond music. She has also taken part in paragliding, surfing and rock climbing, embracing challenges that many people would consider impossible.

At Moganshan, Zhang joined around 3,000 athletes on the rugged course. Despite the physical demands, she continued pushing forward obstacle after obstacle until she finally crossed the finish line to cheers from fellow competitors and spectators.

Reflecting on the experience, Zhang said: “Today, I felt a new energy, the indomitable Spartan spirit.”

Her remarkable performance has since attracted attention far beyond Zhejiang, serving as a powerful reminder that physical challenges do not have to determine the limits of human ambition.

Zhang Qihui did not simply finish a race — she challenged the definition of what is possible.
