Flash Floods Kill 95 in Nepal as 384 Tourists Remain Missing
At least 95 people have been confirmed dead and 384 tourists and travellers reported missing after devastating flash floods swept through Nepal’s northern Rasuwa district near the border with China, authorities said.
The disaster struck along the Bhote Koshi River, affecting areas including Timure and Syabrubesi, a gateway to the Langtang trekking region and a route used by pilgrims travelling towards Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. The floods swept away buildings, roads and bridges and caused widespread damage to critical infrastructure.
According to the Nepal Tourism Board, the 384 travellers initially reported out of contact include 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens. The missing foreign nationals reportedly include citizens of India, the United States, Australia, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and other countries. Authorities stressed that the figures remain preliminary and are being verified.
The flooding has also disrupted communications and transportation in the affected region, complicating rescue and recovery operations. Search teams, security agencies and tourism officials have been mobilised to locate missing people and establish their whereabouts.
The Nepal government reported that 95 bodies had been recovered across several flood-affected districts, while numerous people remained unaccounted for.
The disaster has prompted an urgent search-and-rescue operation as authorities continue to assess the scale of the destruction and work to reunite survivors with their families.
Authorities have urged families and travel operators to remain in contact with Nepalese security and tourism agencies as efforts continue to verify the list of missing travellers.
