From Phone Salesman to Oscar Nominee: Barkhad Abdi’s Extraordinary Hollywood Journey
Barkhad Abdi’s journey to Hollywood success began far from the red carpet. While working as a limousine driver in Minneapolis, Abdi came across an open casting call for Somali actors for a Tom Hanks film. Despite having no previous acting experience, he decided to audition.
His decision changed his life. Abdi was cast as Abduwali Muse, the Somali pirate leader, in Captain Phillips, which was filmed in 2012 on a reported $55 million budget. He was paid $65,000 for the role, reportedly only slightly above the Screen Actors Guild minimum for a feature film.
After the nine-week production ended, Abdi returned to Minneapolis and went back to work at his brother’s mobile phone shop at the 24 Mall. With the film still in post-production, he said he could not afford to stop working.
Everything changed when Captain Phillips premiered in October 2013. Abdi left the phone shop, telling The New Yorker: “When the movie came out, reviews either gonna be good or bad. Either way, I cannot be working here.”
The reviews turned out to be exceptional. Abdi earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his first-ever acting role. He also received nominations for a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
The film became a worldwide success, grossing about $218 million, while Abdi emerged as one of the breakout stars of the awards season.
Yet behind the glamour, Abdi was far from wealthy. The $65,000 he had earned for the film had been paid two years earlier. During the awards season, he relied largely on a studio per diem while staying at the Beverly Hilton, with transportation and clothing provided for official publicity appearances.
Rather than staying in expensive accommodation, Abdi reportedly asked to stay at a hotel near LAX so he could be closer to a friend, a Somali cab driver from Minneapolis who helped drive him around.
His story became one of Hollywood’s most striking contrasts: a man walking red carpets, attending major award ceremonies and becoming internationally recognised, while still carrying the financial reality of his former life as a phone salesman.
Abdi has since established a steady acting career, appearing in films including Eye in the Sky, Blade Runner 2049 and Good Time. His remarkable rise from limousine and phone-shop worker to Oscar-nominated actor remains an inspiring example of how an unexpected opportunity can transform a person’s life.
