In 2018, 22-year-old Mamoudou Gassama, an undocumented migrant from Mali, became an international symbol of courage after risking his life to rescue a four-year-old boy who was dangling from a fourth-floor balcony in Paris.
Gassama was walking through the French capital when he heard screams and noticed a crowd gathered outside an apartment building. Looking up, he saw the child desperately clinging to the edge of a balcony, with the ground several floors below.
Without hesitation, Gassama rushed towards the building and began climbing its exterior, using the balcony railings as handholds. Moving rapidly from one balcony to another, he reached the fourth floor in less than 30 seconds.
When he reached the child, Gassama pulled him to safety, bringing an end to the terrifying ordeal as shocked onlookers captured the dramatic rescue on their phones.
The footage quickly went viral, attracting millions of views around the world and earning Gassama the nickname “Spider-Man of Paris.” Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo praised his bravery and personally thanked him for his heroic action.
Two days later, French President Emmanuel Macron invited Gassama to the Élysée Palace, where he was honoured for his courage.
Recalling the moment, Gassama said he did not stop to think about the danger. He simply ran to help the child, adding that he believed God gave him the strength to complete the rescue.
But the story did not end with the recognition.
Gassama, who had been living in France without legal status, was granted French citizenship through a fast-tracked process following the rescue. He was also offered a position with the Paris Fire Brigade, opening the door to a new career dedicated to saving lives.
