FRSC Corps Marshal Urges Safe Driving as Nigerians Mark Democracy Day
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has called on Nigerians to prioritise safety on the roads as the country celebrates the 2026 Democracy Day, warning against reckless driving and avoidable road crashes during the holiday period.
In a goodwill message, the Corps Marshal noted that national celebrations typically come with increased movement of people and vehicles, leading to heightened risks on major highways and urban roads.
He cautioned motorists against speeding, dangerous overtaking, driving against traffic, overloading, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, stressing that such behaviours remain major causes of road traffic crashes in the country.
“No celebration is worth a single life. The true essence of Democracy Day can only be enjoyed when citizens return safely to their homes and loved ones,” he said.
Shehu Mohammed urged drivers to obey all traffic regulations and called on passengers to also take responsibility by speaking up when drivers engage in unsafe practices.
He emphasised that road safety is a collective duty, noting that every road user has a role in preventing accidents and protecting lives.
“As we celebrate 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, let us demonstrate our commitment to protecting lives through responsible road use,” he added.
The Corps Marshal assured Nigerians that the FRSC has deployed strategic patrol operations, traffic management systems, and emergency response teams nationwide to ensure safe movement throughout the holiday period.
He wished citizens a peaceful, memorable and crash-free Democracy Day celebration, urging them to remember that the greatest success of any journey is arriving home safely.
