Gulf States Unite in Call for De-escalation Amid Iran Strikes

Gulf nations are presenting a unified front in calling for a de-escalation of the ongoing Middle East conflict, Qatar confirmed Tuesday, as Tehran launched fresh attacks on neighbouring countries.

“Our understanding is that there is a very unified position in the Gulf on calling for de-escalation and an end to the war,” said Majed al-Ansari, spokesman for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a routine briefing.

The Gulf region has faced repeated drone and missile strikes from Iran over the past month, in retaliation to U.S. and Israeli military actions that began at the end of February. Tehran has targeted critical hydrocarbon infrastructure across oil-rich Gulf states while effectively restricting shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint through which roughly 20% of global oil trade passes.

On Monday, an Iranian parliamentary committee voted to impose tolls on vessels in the strait and to ban ships from the United States and Israel entirely. Ansari described the strait as “closed due to a military operation” but added that its future “is something for all the region and international partners to decide collectively.”

While Gulf states largely share a commitment to reducing tensions, differences have emerged in their approaches to Iran. The United Arab Emirates has adopted a more hawkish stance, emphasizing that a simple ceasefire is insufficient.

In an opinion piece published in the Wall Street Journal this week, UAE Ambassador to Washington, Yousef Al Otaiba, stated, “We need a conclusive outcome that addresses Iran’s full range of threats: nuclear capabilities, missiles, drones, terror proxies, and blockades of international sea lanes.” He added that the UAE is ready to support an international initiative to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The ongoing crisis underscores the Gulf’s strategic importance and the pressing need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation that could threaten global energy supplies and regional stability.
