IGP Convenes Emergency Security Meeting, Orders Reforms, Announces New Tactical Unit
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Tuesday convened an emergency conference with senior strategic managers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to address pressing national security concerns and reinforce accountability across commands nationwide.
The high-level meeting, attended by the Force Management Team, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and members of the media, focused on strengthening operational efficiency and outlining new strategic directives in response to the evolving security landscape.
In his address, the IGP stressed the need for transparency, discipline, and leadership responsibility at all levels, noting that modern policing requires a more responsive, intelligence-driven, and accountable approach.
He also addressed a recent incident in Delta State involving the extrajudicial killing of a suspect, describing the act as unlawful and inconsistent with the values of the Force. Disu confirmed that the officers involved had been dismissed, while the case has been forwarded for criminal prosecution. He reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, emphasizing that no officer is above the law.
Highlighting operational achievements for April 2026, the police chief disclosed that intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of 28 suspected terrorists, 51 murder suspects, 62 armed robbery suspects, 85 kidnapping suspects, and 54 suspected cultists. He added that 189 kidnapped victims were rescued, while 140 firearms, 1,074 rounds of ammunition, and 37 stolen vehicles were recovered.
As part of ongoing reforms, the IGP announced the creation of a new tactical formation, the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), designed to improve rapid response to serious and violent crimes. He noted that the unit would operate strictly on intelligence-based deployment, supported by specialized training, human rights compliance, and structured accountability, with Commissioners of Police directly responsible for oversight.
Disu further directed Commissioners of Police across the country to strengthen community policing by holding regular town hall meetings with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders. He also mandated that senior officers make their contact details accessible to community leaders to enhance communication and build public trust.
The IGP reaffirmed that ongoing reforms within the Force are centered on professionalism, discipline, human rights compliance, and accountability, supported by mechanisms such as the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU).
The Nigeria Police Force, he said, remains committed to institutional reforms, improved operational effectiveness, and the protection of the rights and safety of all Nigerians.
