The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has been inaugurated as Chairman of the Board of Police Health Maintenance Limited (PHML), reaffirming his commitment to strengthening the medical welfare of police personnel across the country.

The inauguration took place during a courtesy visit by the PHML Board of Directors to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, marking what officials described as a new phase of direct oversight and improved healthcare delivery for officers.

The delegation, led by DIG Aminu Yesufu, Director of PHML, included AIG Adenike Abuwa, Dr. Otive Iguzor, Dr. Yusuf Kalli Gazali, Chief Executive Officer of PHML, and AIG Nkechi Eze, Force Medical Director.

During the meeting, PHML leadership highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare services for police personnel, including the renovation of Police Hospitals in Akure, Sokoto, Bambam, Yola, and Lagos. The organisation also disclosed that it has secured agreements with federal tertiary hospitals to provide immediate, cost-free treatment for officers suffering from gunshot wounds and trauma-related injuries.

In addition, PHML announced a specialised partnership with Zenith Healthcare Limited to deliver advanced renal care services, aimed at improving treatment options for officers with chronic health conditions.

In his remarks, IGP Disu emphasised that the health and well-being of officers remain a critical component of national security. He urged the PHML board to prioritise practical healthcare outcomes over administrative performance metrics, stressing that frontline personnel must remain the focus of all medical planning.

The police chief also identified key challenges within the system, including limited insurance coverage for retired officers and the need to rehabilitate healthcare facilities in police barracks nationwide.

He reiterated his commitment to building a resilient and efficient police force, noting that effective policing depends largely on the physical and mental well-being of officers.

The visit concluded with a renewed pledge by PHML leadership to sustain reforms and expand access to quality healthcare services for personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
