Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu has proposed a 200 per cent gratuity and improved pension benefits for retired police officers as part of efforts to strengthen retirement security and address longstanding concerns over post-service welfare.

According to a statement by the Nigeria Police Force, the proposal is before a Presidential Committee comprising key financial and pension institutions, which is examining sustainable solutions to challenges surrounding police retirement benefits.

The proposed reforms include pensions linked to officers’ last salaries, measures to address outstanding pension liabilities and possible reviews of benefits for personnel who have already retired.

The initiative also seeks to address dissatisfaction with the Contributory Pension Scheme and improve the administration and timely payment of retirement benefits to police personnel.

Although the Federal Government has reportedly cleared pension payment backlogs and introduced increases for some beneficiaries, retired police officers continue to call for a more sustainable retirement system that adequately supports them after years of service.

The proposed package is expected to form part of broader discussions on improving the welfare of serving and retired police personnel.

However, the proposed 200 per cent gratuity and other pension adjustments have not yet been approved as new entitlements. Their implementation will depend on the committee’s recommendations, subsequent government approval, funding arrangements and the issuance of final guidelines.
