The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Thursday undertook an official visit to Akwa Ibom State, where he paid a courtesy call on Governor Umo Eno ahead of the passing-out ceremony of retrained police constables in Uyo.
The engagement between the police leadership and the state government focused on strengthening institutional collaboration to support ongoing policing reforms anchored on professionalism, accountability, and intelligence-led operations.
During the visit, the Inspector-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to building a modern, service-driven institution that prioritises public trust and operational efficiency.
Governor Eno, in his remarks, welcomed the police chief and commended the Force for its reform initiatives aimed at improving discipline, professionalism, and service delivery. He also reiterated the state government’s readiness to continue supporting security agencies in safeguarding lives and property.
The IGP later presided over the passing-out ceremony of 1,068 retrained police constables at the Police Mobile Force Base, 26 PMF, Uyo.
Addressing the officers, Disu said the retraining programme forms part of deliberate efforts to enhance operational competence, particularly in weapons handling, discipline, and adherence to established rules of engagement, including Force Order 237.
He stressed that effective policing requires not only courage but also professionalism, restraint, and respect for human rights.
The police chief reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance policy on misuse of firearms and extra-judicial conduct, warning that any officer found culpable would face immediate dismissal and prosecution in line with the law.
He commended the Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Mohammed Azare, for the successful execution of the retraining programme, particularly noting the inclusion and performance of female officers, which he described as a model for commands nationwide.
The IGP also highlighted recent operational successes in the state, including the rescue of kidnapped victims along the Calabar–Oron waterways, attributing the achievements to effective intelligence-led policing and inter-agency collaboration.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to building a professional, accountable, and citizen-focused institution capable of addressing evolving security challenges across the country.
