IGP Disu Warns Against Misuse of Police Videos, Calls for Responsible Reporting

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has called for the responsible recording and circulation of police-related videos and content, warning that the misuse of such materials can undermine security operations, mislead the public and negatively affect the morale of police personnel.

The IGP made the call during an interactive session with members of the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria in Abuja, where he reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to accountability, transparency, professionalism and respect for human rights.

Disu cautioned against the circulation of misleading, outdated or manipulated videos involving police officers, noting that such content can erode public trust, create false narratives and threaten community stability.

According to him, while public scrutiny of law enforcement agencies remains important in a democratic society, it must be balanced with an understanding of the realities and challenges of modern policing.

The police chief stressed that officers often operate under difficult and high-risk conditions while working to safeguard lives and property across the country.

He disclosed that policing has become increasingly demanding, with personnel frequently working long hours and making significant sacrifices in the line of duty.

The IGP revealed that the Federal Capital Territory Police Command lost about 140 officers in the past year due to violent attacks, accidents and other duty-related incidents.

While reiterating the Force’s zero-tolerance policy on misconduct, Disu assured Nigerians that officers found guilty of professional violations would continue to face disciplinary action.

At the same time, he emphasized the need to protect officers carrying out lawful duties from harassment, misinformation and unjustified attacks.

The Inspector-General also pledged continued engagement with the media, describing journalists as vital partners in the fight against insecurity.

He urged media practitioners to maintain professionalism and accuracy in their reporting, stressing that responsible journalism remains essential to public safety and national security.

According to him, stronger collaboration between the police and the media will help promote public confidence, strengthen security awareness and support ongoing efforts to combat crime across the country.
