Ilhan Omar Seeks Support as Federal Authorities Investigate Alleged Immigration Fraud
United States Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has appealed to her supporters for continued financial contributions, describing the period as challenging as she faces reported federal scrutiny over alleged immigration-related offences.
Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, made the appeal in a video message recorded while travelling in a vehicle, thanking supporters who had contributed to her political efforts.
“Hi everyone, Ilhan here,” she said, expressing appreciation to those who had donated $5, $10 and $20 to support her.
She alleged that former President Donald Trump and his administration were attempting to intimidate her and others ahead of the US midterm elections.
The congresswoman is reportedly at the centre of a federal investigation examining immigration and naturalisation records dating back several decades. The inquiry is said to concern her family’s arrival in the United States as refugees from Somalia in 1995 and the process through which she became a US citizen in 2000.
According to reports attributed to Reuters, a search warrant listed potential offences including conspiracy, immigration fraud and making false statements on immigration documents. The investigation reportedly involves federal authorities, including Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative arm of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The Associated Press also reported that investigators seized Omar’s phone and issued grand jury subpoenas to some of her relatives as part of the inquiry.
Omar has strongly denied wrongdoing and accused the Trump administration of using federal law enforcement to target political opponents.
The investigation comes amid heightened political tensions in the United States ahead of the midterm elections, with the congresswoman maintaining that the scrutiny against her is politically motivated.
However, the allegations remain subject to investigation, and no finding of guilt has been established.
