Indian Content Creator Flooded With Fake Cash-on-Delivery Orders After Asking for Diwali Sweets
A simple request for Diwali sweets has turned into a stressful ordeal for a content creator in Madurai, southern India, after people allegedly used his home address to place numerous unwanted cash-on-delivery (COD) orders for expensive household appliances and electronic gadgets.
The content creator, Veeramani, had shared his address on social media ahead of the Diwali festival, hoping his followers would send him boxes of sweets. However, the request reportedly prompted some people to place orders for televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, smartphones and other items he had never purchased.
Because the orders were placed on a cash-on-delivery basis, Veeramani was expected to pay for the items upon delivery, despite having neither ordered them nor agreed to purchase them.
One television order was reportedly valued at 169,000 Indian rupees, while delivery personnel from online shopping platforms repeatedly arrived at his residence with unwanted parcels.
In a video shared online, Veeramani said as many as 15 orders arrived within 30 minutes. He appealed to those responsible to stop, explaining that the prank was causing him considerable stress and wasting delivery workers’ time.
He also expressed concern that delivery personnel were being dragged into the situation despite having no involvement in the prank. However, the unwanted orders reportedly continued despite his repeated appeals.
As the situation escalated, reports indicated that Veeramani left his residence to escape the relentless deliveries and harassment.
Swiggy Instamart Steps In With Gifts
The incident later took a positive turn when Swiggy Instamart surprised Veeramani with genuine gifts, including household and electronic items, as well as the Diwali sweets he had originally requested.
The gesture followed widespread attention on social media, where his experience had sparked discussions about online pranks, the misuse of personal information and the impact of such actions on delivery workers.
What began as a request for a box of festive sweets ultimately became an unexpected lesson in responsible online behaviour, highlighting how seemingly harmless pranks can cause distress, disrupt businesses and inconvenience innocent people.
