The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Staff Clinic has concluded its 2026 Nurses Week celebration with a grand finale commemorating International Nurses Day, bringing together health professionals, management staff, and dignitaries to honour the dedication and sacrifices of nurses.

The week-long celebration, themed “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” focused on the critical role nurses play in healthcare delivery, patient safety, and national development.

In her welcome address, Mercy Ogunleye described nurses as the backbone of compassionate healthcare delivery at the INEC Clinic.

“Despite the inadequacies, we witness the power in our nurses’ clinical expertise, compassion for staff and their families, and dedication,” she said.

According to her, the celebration, which began on May 6 with a road walk and enlightenment campaign, was designed to recognise the indispensable role of nurses in society.

Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee and National Commissioner, Rhoda Gumus, praised nurses for their commitment to humanity and healthcare service.

“Nursing is a work of heart. You are serving humanity and serving God,” she stated, while noting that International Nurses Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of nurses to patient care, disease prevention, and health promotion.

Delivering the keynote address, Ndagi Alhassan reaffirmed the commitment of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to strengthening the profession through reforms and professional empowerment.

“As the sole regulatory body of Nursing and Midwifery education and practice in Nigeria, the Council has taken deliberate strategic actions to strengthen and advance the nursing profession,” he said.

Representing the Secretary to the Commission, Rose Omoa Oriaran-Anthony, Director of Secretariat, Okuonghae Olayide commended nurses for their resilience and dedication in making healthcare more humane.

The event also featured the presentation of awards to the INEC Chairman, represented by Prof. Rhoda Gumus, the Secretary to the Commission, and retired nurses honoured for their years of meritorious service.

In his remarks, INEC Chairman Joash Ojo Amupitan appreciated nurses for their immense contributions to staff welfare and national service.

“You are indeed the bedrock of healthcare delivery. Your professionalism, dedication, and compassion continue to make a difference despite the constraints,” he said.

The chairman also announced plans to improve healthcare infrastructure for staff, revealing that renovation work had commenced at the clinic alongside efforts to provide additional equipment.

He further disclosed that the commission plans to acquire a larger facility for the Area 10 clinic to enhance healthcare delivery for INEC staff and their families.
