ISWAP Kills Damboa Brigade Commander, General Uba, After Brief Rescue Signal — Army Confirms

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of Brigadier General Uba, Commander of the Damboa Brigade, after he was recaptured and killed by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno State.

General Uba was declared missing during a military operation in the forested axis of Damboa, sparking intense search-and-rescue efforts by ground troops and air assets. Early reports suggested he was safe after a video surfaced showing the commander alive and speaking calmly to his troops.

Military sources said the footage was recorded shortly before the situation deteriorated.

“He was fine in that moment,” a senior source said, explaining that the commander became disoriented while maneuvering through a dense section of the forest. He reportedly contacted rescuers, assuring them he was attempting to retrace his steps back to base — raising brief hopes that he would be found alive.

Those hopes were dashed when ISWAP fighters intercepted and recaptured him shortly after news of his disappearance spread on social media.

The Army later confirmed his death, describing it as “a painful and irreparable loss” to the service and to ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.
