Jonathan Condemns Institutional Decay, Criticises “Go to Court” Response to Alleged Wrongdoing

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed concern over what he described as growing decadence in some government institutions and the increasing tendency of public officials to dismiss criticism by directing aggrieved citizens to seek redress in court.

Speaking at a public event, Jonathan said the practice of telling people to “go to court” whenever concerns are raised about alleged wrongdoing undermines public confidence in institutions and accountability mechanisms.

The former president referenced a popular East African saying to illustrate his point, suggesting that some individuals may be confident of favourable outcomes in the judicial process when challenged.

“We see government institutions doing the wrong thing and telling people to go to court. There is this saying in East Africa that if a thief tells you to go to court, he knows that his brother is the judge,” Jonathan said.

He noted that strong institutions, transparency, and accountability remain essential pillars of democracy and good governance, stressing the need for public office holders and institutions to act in ways that inspire trust among citizens.

Jonathan’s remarks have sparked discussions on governance, institutional independence, and the role of the judiciary in resolving disputes and ensuring justice.

The former president has consistently advocated for democratic values, rule of law, and the strengthening of institutions since leaving office in 2015.
