The Lagos State Government has apprehended 45 beggars, including adults and minors, during separate enforcement operations carried out in Oshodi, Agege and CMS areas of the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development in a statement shared on his official X account on Wednesday.

According to the commissioner, the exercise was part of ongoing efforts by the state government to address street begging and other activities considered detrimental to public order and environmental sanitation.

Wahab stated that 22 beggars, comprising adults and a number of teenagers, were arrested during operations conducted in Oshodi and Agege.

He further revealed that an additional 23 persons, including 14 adults and nine children, were apprehended at CMS during the enforcement exercise.

The commissioner noted that the affected individuals were taken into custody for further profiling and appropriate intervention in line with existing government policies.

The Lagos State Government has repeatedly maintained that street begging, particularly involving children, poses social and security concerns and remains committed to enforcing laws aimed at maintaining order in public spaces.

Authorities said the operations form part of broader efforts to create a cleaner, safer and more organized environment across the state.

The government also reiterated its appeal to residents to support initiatives aimed at addressing social welfare challenges while discouraging activities that expose vulnerable persons, especially children, to risks on the streets.
