Livestock Traders Battle Heatwave as Sallah Approaches in Northern Nigeria

As preparations for Eid al-Adha (Sallah) gather momentum, livestock traders across Northern Nigeria are facing growing challenges due to intense heatwaves affecting several parts of the region.

The harsh weather conditions have increased concerns over the health and wellbeing of animals as vendors work to protect their livestock from extreme temperatures ahead of the festive period, when demand for rams, sheep and other animals traditionally rises.

In states such as Sokoto, Katsina and Kebbi, traders are adopting different measures to keep animals hydrated and healthy, including frequent watering, providing shaded areas and making use of available streams and boreholes.

The efforts mirror scenes seen in other parts of the world, including a recent image from Islamabad, Pakistan, showing a livestock vendor cooling his sheep at Rawal Dam amid high temperatures.

For many livestock merchants, maintaining animal health during the hot season has become a demanding daily responsibility, as extreme heat can affect feeding patterns, reduce productivity and increase health risks among animals.

With Sallah drawing closer, traders say protecting their animals remains essential not only for preserving their investments but also for ensuring healthy livestock are available for the religious sacrifice associated with the celebration.
