NAF @ 60: CAS Emphasizes Research and Development as Key to Operational Effectiveness

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has highlighted the critical role of Research and Development (R&D) in enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). Speaking at the NAF Inter-Command Research and Development Competition, held at NAF Base, Bill Clinton Drive, Abuja, Air Marshal Abubakar stressed the need to build indigenous capacity for manufacturing and servicing platforms to overcome maintenance challenges.

The event was part of the activities commemorating NAF’s 60th Anniversary. Reflecting on NAF’s history, Air Marshal Abubakar recounted the grounding of the entire fleet of 18 Jaguar aircraft acquired in 1984, just seven years later, due to a lack of spare parts and technical expertise, despite some aircraft having as little as 150 flight hours. He also mentioned the premature retirement of the MiG 21 aircraft, procured in 1975 and retired in the late 1980s with flight hours ranging from 43 to 469 hours. These instances underscored the challenges faced by NAF in sustaining operations due to technical deficiencies.

“This highlights the indispensable role of Research and Development in NAF’s operations,” declared Air Marshal Abubakar. He emphasized NAF’s pioneering efforts in R&D, citing achievements such as the production of the Tsaigumi UAV, advancements in rocket launchers and heat shields, and the weaponization of Alpha Jet aircraft. These innovations have ensured the readiness and deployment of NAF platforms across various operational theaters.

Recognizing the importance of R&D, Air Marshal Abubakar announced the approval for the installation of eight diverse CNC machines at the Air Force Research and Development Centre in Osogbo. He also revealed that NAF is on the verge of signing a technology transfer agreement with a European company for the production of 57mm rocket armament. “These endeavors epitomize our commitment to prioritizing Research and Development, leveraging state-of-the-art technology, strategic partnerships, and lessons learned, in alignment with my command philosophy,” he stated.

In his opening address, the Chief of Standard and Evaluation, Air Vice Marshal MN Onyebashi, explained that the competition aimed to showcase innovative solutions to operational, maintenance, and service-related challenges within the NAF.

The occasion was attended by Branch Chiefs, senior officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and NAF, as well as participants from NAF Commands across the country.
