The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening environmental conservation and biodiversity research through strategic collaboration with research institutions.

As part of the effort, the Acting Zonal Director of the North Central Zonal Office, Mr. Jude Appiah, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Director of A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute, Professor Adams Chaskda, at the institute’s office located within the Amurum Forest conservation area in Laminga.

The visit was aimed at strengthening partnerships in support of NESREA’s mandate on biodiversity conservation, environmental quality management, and access and benefit-sharing of genetic resources.

Speaking during the engagement, Professor Adams Chaskda provided an overview of the institute, describing APLORI as a leading centre for ornithological research and bird conservation in Nigeria, operating within one of the country’s important forest ecosystems.

The discussions explored possible areas of collaboration, particularly in relation to NESREA’s regulatory responsibilities under relevant environmental laws and international agreements, including provisions linked to biodiversity conservation and access to genetic resources.

Mr. Appiah highlighted the importance of birds as indicators of environmental health, noting that changes in bird populations often reflect wider ecological challenges such as habitat loss, pollution and climate change.

According to him, early identification of declining bird species can provide important warnings to scientists, regulators and conservation stakeholders about emerging environmental threats before they become severe.

He further stressed the need for stronger collaboration between regulatory institutions and scientific organisations, stating that research partnerships remain vital for evidence-based policymaking and effective environmental management.

Both parties expressed commitment to strengthening cooperation and exploring formal frameworks that would support long-term collaboration in environmental protection and biodiversity conservation efforts.
