Nigeria Takes Centre Stage as NIPR Unveils Global PR Milestones Ahead of World Forum

Nigeria is positioning itself as a global hub for strategic communication and public relations as the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) announced a series of landmark initiatives that will place the country at the centre of the global communication landscape later this year.

In a statement commemorating the 2026 World Public Relations Day on Thursday, NIPR President and Chairman of Council, Dr. Ike Neliaku, said Nigeria would host the world’s largest gathering of public relations professionals during the World Public Relations Forum (WPRF), scheduled for November 15 to 21 in Abuja.

The annual celebration, themed “The Golden Age of Strategic PR,” comes as the institute intensifies preparations for what it described as one of the most significant events in the history of the profession.

According to Neliaku, the Abuja forum is expected to attract about 3,000 delegates from 126 member countries of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, including presidents, industry leaders, regulators, communication executives and scholars.

He said the hosting rights underscore Nigeria’s growing influence in global reputation management and strategic communication.

“Hosting the WPRF in this country affirms Nigeria’s ascension as a strategic voice in global reputation discourse. It implies that Nigeria is no longer merely a participant in the business of global reputation management, but has become a hub for communication excellence,” he said.

Beyond the global conference, Neliaku revealed that Nigeria would also inaugurate the University of Public Relations and Leadership (UPRL) on November 20, describing it as the world’s first specialised university dedicated exclusively to Public Relations and Leadership studies.

The institution, he explained, is being developed through a partnership involving government, professional bodies and international strategic partners to train future communication leaders, crisis managers and trusted advisers capable of influencing governance and national development.

The university’s inauguration will form one of the flagship events of the World Public Relations Forum.

Adding to the milestones, the NIPR President disclosed that the institute would also commission what he described as the world’s largest national public relations secretariat during the same period.

He said the projects collectively demonstrate Nigeria’s emergence as a leading force in the global communication ecosystem.

Neliaku also announced the unveiling of The Africa Declaration on the Professionalisation of Public Relations and Responsible Communication, a continental charter developed by Africa’s professional communication bodies to establish common standards, strengthen ethical practice and deepen responsible communication across the continent.

He noted that NIPR was among the founding signatories of the declaration, which recognises the Nigerian model of combining professional independence with government support to advance public relations practice.

According to him, the declaration will be formally signed during the World Public Relations Forum in Abuja, making Nigeria the venue for what he described as the founding moment of Africa’s shared professional future.

Reflecting on this year’s World Public Relations Day theme, Neliaku said the profession has evolved from its traditional role of media engagement into a strategic leadership function that influences decision-making at the highest levels of government and business.

He noted that public relations practitioners now serve as boardroom strategists, reputation architects and trusted advisers whose expertise is increasingly central to institutional credibility and sustainable development.

“As the profession enters this golden age, NIPR remains resolute in equipping Nigerian practitioners with the strategic acumen, ethical grounding and relationship intelligence required to sit confidently at decision-making tables, both locally and globally. Public relations is no longer just a support function; it is now strategic development capital,” he said.

He urged communication professionals to embrace the demands of the new era by demonstrating integrity, strategic insight and trust-building in advancing the profession and contributing to national development.

World Public Relations Day is observed annually to celebrate the contributions of public relations professionals to governance, business, development and society while promoting excellence and ethical standards in strategic communication worldwide.
