Nigeria, World Food Programme Strengthen Partnership on Food Security, Humanitarian Support
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) to enhance food security, humanitarian assistance and sustainable development across the country.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving the newly appointed World Food Programme Country Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Katrien Ghoos, who presented her Letter of Commission during a meeting in Abuja.
The meeting reviewed the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and the WFP, with discussions focusing on food security, nutrition, humanitarian assistance, resilience-building and sustainable development.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu commended the World Food Programme for its continued support to Nigeria, particularly its life-saving interventions for vulnerable populations affected by humanitarian crises.
She acknowledged the organisation’s contribution to the Federal Government’s efforts to improve food security, strengthen community resilience and promote sustainable livelihoods.
The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with the WFP and other development partners to address the root causes of food insecurity through coordinated humanitarian and development programmes.
She stressed the importance of integrating emergency humanitarian assistance with long-term development strategies aimed at increasing agricultural productivity, improving rural livelihoods, expanding economic inclusion and strengthening resilience to climate change and other emerging challenges.
In her remarks, the WFP Country Representative, Ms. Katrien Ghoos, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to achieve food security and sustainable development through continued collaboration with the Federal Government.
