Dr. Awakan made the appeal while delivering the host address at the African Tourism Summit held at Eko Hotels and Suites. The summit was organised by the African Travel Commission (ATC) in collaboration with the NTDA and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In his remarks, the NTDA boss stressed the need for “newness and freshness” in the tourism sector, noting that innovation, strategic partnerships, and coordinated efforts are essential to unlocking its full economic potential.

He stated that tourism holds immense capacity to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic advancement if stakeholders align their efforts and adopt forward-looking strategies.

Dr. Awakan also reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to the objectives of the African Travel Commission, particularly in promoting intra-African tourism and cultural exchange. He emphasized the importance of leveraging Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, creative industry, and human capital to strengthen Africa’s tourism narrative on the global stage.

The summit brought together policymakers, tourism operators, and regional stakeholders to explore strategies for expanding Africa’s tourism footprint and fostering sustainable development through regional cooperation.
