Pennsylvania Bride Revives 120-Year-Old Family Wedding Dress Tradition
A Pennsylvania bride, Abigail Kingston, made history when she became the 11th woman in her family to wear a wedding dress that has been treasured and passed down through generations for more than a century.
The tradition dates back to 1895, when Abigail’s great-great-grandmother, Mary Lowry Warren, first wore the Victorian-era gown on her wedding day.
More than eight decades later, Abigail’s mother, Leslie, continued the tradition by wearing the same dress for her wedding in 1977.
By the time the historic gown reached Abigail, however, its delicate silk and lace had deteriorated significantly. The once-elegant dress had turned brown and developed dozens of holes, leaving it too fragile to be worn without careful restoration.
A local designer reportedly spent about 200 hours painstakingly restoring the heirloom, carefully preserving the historic fabric while bringing the gown back to life.
Because of its delicate condition, Abigail chose not to wear the dress throughout her entire wedding ceremony. Instead, she wore it for photographs and during her cocktail hour, allowing her to honour the family tradition while protecting the precious garment from further damage.
For Abigail, the gown represented far more than bridal fashion.
She was wearing more than a century of family memories, love and tradition — while helping preserve a remarkable heirloom for future generations of brides.
