Police, INEC Align Strategies for Peaceful Elections Ahead of 2027 Polls
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has hosted the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, and his delegation at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to formalise a strategic roadmap aimed at ensuring peaceful and credible elections.
The high-level meeting brought together members of the Force Management Team and senior officials of INEC, including National Commissioners from various geopolitical zones. Discussions focused on strengthening the security architecture for the upcoming electoral cycle, particularly the Ekiti and Osun off-cycle elections, bye-elections, and the 2027 General Elections.
In his remarks, Amupitan stressed the need for proactive security planning and specialised training for personnel, highlighting the importance of providing a safe voting environment for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs).
Responding, the IGP described the engagement as timely and critical to democratic stability, noting that the Nigeria Police Force has already activated key measures to address potential threats. These include intelligence-driven mapping to curb political violence, enhanced security for the movement of electoral materials and personnel, coordinated operations with other security agencies, and efforts to counter misinformation.
Disu assured that all officers deployed for election duties would operate strictly within the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act, with ongoing training focused on rules of engagement and human rights protection.
He reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance policy for misconduct, warning that any officer found undermining the credibility of the electoral process would face disciplinary action in line with the law.
The IGP further pledged the full support of the Nigeria Police Force to INEC, while calling for stronger collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure a smooth, transparent, and credible electoral process across the country.
