Presidency Inaugurates Committee to Draft National Policing Bill for State Police Implementation
The Federal Government has inaugurated a Presidential Working Group to prepare the National Policing Bill, a key piece of legislation expected to provide the legal framework for the implementation of state police across Nigeria.
The committee was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The development follows the passage of the Constitution Alteration (State Police) Bill, 2026, by the National Assembly, which proposes the establishment of a dual policing system comprising the Federal Police Service and 36 State Police Services.
Speaking at the inauguration, Gbajabiamila explained that while the constitutional amendment provides the legal basis for the creation of state police, the proposed National Policing Bill will define the operational framework for the new policing structure.
He said the legislation would address critical legal, administrative and operational issues required to ensure the smooth implementation of state police across the federation.
According to him, the bill is expected to establish clear guidelines for the relationship between the Federal Police Service and State Police Services, while providing mechanisms for accountability, coordination and effective law enforcement.
The Chief of Staff will chair the Presidential Working Group.
Other members of the committee include the Attorney-General of the Federation, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Chairman of the NGF Committee on State Police.
The committee is expected to develop a comprehensive legal framework that will support the operationalisation of state policing as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen internal security and improve policing across the country.
