Russia has significantly expanded its military footprint in Mali, deploying advanced combat aircraft, helicopters and drones as part of its growing security partnership with the West African nation.

According to reports, Russia’s Africa Corps, which operates under the authority of the Russian Ministry of Defence and succeeded the former Wagner Group, has established a substantial combat aviation presence in Mali.

The deployment, based at Bamako-Sénou International Airport and Modibo Keita International Airport, reportedly includes Sukhoi Su-24M tactical bombers, Mi-24P attack helicopters, Mi-8AMTSh assault helicopters, heavy transport aircraft, as well as Inokhodets strike drones and Orlan reconnaissance drones.

Military analysts say the deployment provides Mali with enhanced aerial surveillance and rapid-response strike capabilities in its ongoing fight against insurgent and jihadist groups operating across parts of the country.

The reconnaissance drones are reportedly being used to gather real-time intelligence, while strike drones and combat aircraft can be deployed against identified targets, improving the ability of Malian forces to respond to security threats in remote areas.

The development marks one of Russia’s most significant military expansions in Africa in recent years and reflects the deepening security cooperation between Moscow and the Malian government.

Mali has increasingly turned to Russia for military assistance following the withdrawal of French forces, which had been involved in counterterrorism operations in the country for nearly a decade. Relations between Bamako and Western partners deteriorated after a series of military coups, prompting the Malian authorities to seek alternative security alliances.

Security challenges remain a major concern across the Sahel region, where armed extremist groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State continue to operate despite years of international military interventions.

The latest deployment underscores Russia’s growing influence in the Sahel and highlights the shifting geopolitical landscape in a region that has become a focal point of international security competition.
