At least 18 people were killed after Russia launched a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks on residential areas in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on Monday, marking the second major assault on the city within a week.

Authorities said the strikes hit apartment buildings and other civilian infrastructure, causing significant destruction and leaving several others injured.

The latest attack comes on the eve of a crucial NATO summit, where support for Ukraine is expected to dominate discussions.

Reacting to the assault, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on NATO leaders to make “strong decisions” to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence capabilities and help protect civilians from continued Russian attacks.

The strike follows another deadly Russian bombardment in Kyiv just days earlier, which claimed the lives of more than 30 people.

Ukraine has continued to urge its Western allies to provide additional air defence systems as Russia intensifies its aerial campaign against major cities across the country.
