Researchers in Finland have successfully demonstrated a new method of transmitting electrical energy through air, marking a significant step toward the future of wireless power systems.

The experiment, carried out by research teams from the University of Helsinki, University of Oulu, and Aalto University, combined ultrasonic sound waves, laser-based transmission, and radio-frequency technologies to move electrical energy without physical cables in controlled laboratory conditions.

In the system, electricity is first converted into electromagnetic or light-based energy, transmitted through air along a guided path, and then reconverted into usable electrical power at the receiving end. Researchers say the approach demonstrates the feasibility of controlled, contactless energy delivery over short distances.

While still in the experimental stage and not yet suitable for replacing conventional power grids, scientists say the potential applications are wide-ranging. These include powering Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, medical implants, warehouse robotics, and potentially even charging moving electric vehicles in the future.

According to related research published in IEEE studies on wireless power transfer, AI-assisted systems have shown efficiency levels of up to 90 percent under optimized conditions, further supporting the viability of the technology for practical use cases.

Experts note that the breakthrough could reshape how energy is delivered in environments where wiring is difficult, expensive, or unsafe, such as industrial facilities, hospitals, and smart infrastructure systems.

If developed at scale, the technology could eventually reduce reliance on physical charging ports and electrical sockets, enabling devices to receive power simply by being within a designated energy field.

Researchers caution, however, that significant engineering challenges remain, including scaling the technology for long-range transmission, ensuring safety standards, and maintaining efficiency outside controlled environments.

Still, the demonstration is being viewed as an important milestone in the global pursuit of wireless energy systems, bringing the concept of truly cable-free electricity a step closer to reality.
