The Senate has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Armed Forces of Nigeria for the successful rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire, Oyo State, describing the operation as a demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling insecurity.

The commendation followed the adoption of a motion during Tuesday’s plenary on the successful rescue operation. The motion, moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, received unanimous support after extensive deliberations by lawmakers.

Speaking during the debate, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, said President Tinubu had continued to demonstrate strong commitment and determination in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.

He also praised the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their professionalism and sustained efforts in degrading criminal networks and improving security nationwide.

Senator Barau, however, observed that Nigeria’s security challenges are influenced by wider regional and global developments, particularly the instability in the Sahel region and conflicts in other parts of the world, which continue to impact the country’s internal security.

Despite these challenges, he said the Federal Government has made significant progress in containing insecurity, assuring that the Senate would continue to provide the legislative support required to strengthen national security and protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

As part of its resolutions, the Senate commended President Tinubu for his decisive leadership in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and applauded the Armed Forces for their courage, professionalism and patriotism in carrying out the rescue operation.

The upper chamber also condoled the families of military personnel and teachers who lost their lives in the line of duty and called for the prompt payment of all statutory benefits due to the families of the fallen heroes.

Meanwhile, the Senate considered other legislative business during the plenary, with three bills passing first reading, while the Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Medical Centres Act to Establish the Federal Medical Centre, Argungu, Kebbi State, 2026, scaled second reading.

The Senate adjourned plenary until Wednesday, July 15, 2026. Following the sitting, members of the National Assembly participated in activities marking the 2026 National Assembly Open Week.
